Exceed debuts another innovation.
Sweltering hot conditions met athletes at City of Perth State Olympic distance Championships on January 30, 2011.
Yet again the race was hot and yet again the organisers mixed up the race to make more debacles than the Gillard government.
The swim was long, the ride was long and marred by some poor rules, and the run had drinks stations only serving hot water.
The powers to be decided on an unworkable Green Zone that caused more dramas to everyone. The zone was poorly marked, and was clearly wide enough for all athletes except for maybe some tricycle riders to pass and negotiate slower riders. How is an Exceed member (40km+ Rider) be expected to slow down for a person wearing runners riding a hybrid struggling to do 15kph. And then allow other non Exceed club members to catch up and hang on.
People were penalised and sent to the box for drafting in the green, and for passing there was plenty of DQ’s. Luckily, some of those peoples got their race reinstated.
Now for the run…How in this day and age running an event like this in Perth at this time of year can you start the event late to accommodate a non-championship event. The run leg was on the hot tar of Riverside Dve, and only handing out hot water, because the powers to be decided they would save money or time and have no ice available. Terrible, unsafe and Un-Australian.
Exceed Tri Club, will look to work with the organisers to help address some of our issues, and if there is no changes made, then we will be looking to reconsider our participation at this event. Exceed had 5% of the field and managed to pick up 17% of the trophies on offer. We have a voice!
Innovation, and nomination for support idea of the year, goes to Rocket Rod Marton, with his ice bath. There were many doubters as to how effective a small paddle pool with ice water in it would be (We Can Afford Ice). But as many people will agree it was absolute gold, especially when coupled with the sponges. Athletes finished a long hard hot race, and then found there way to the oasis that was the exceed tent, where they were met by a smiling Rocket Rod in full war paint and an ice cold bath to soak there feet. Ice cold drinks, ice poles, muffins (Thanks Merredeth & Glenda) and lollies where available.
If you would like to come and help out, please do not hesitate we can always use an extra hand setting up packing up, and supporting the number one club in the west.
